As we have discussed why people make laws, the following article relates to some of these needs. Please read and give your opinion as to the issue. Keep in mind the notion of laws that promote the common good.

i think that hate speech should not be tolerated, beacuse it tends to single out certain groups and can lead to violence, and hostility. for allowing hate speech it would propoably creat a higher crime rate, it also would creat a bigger dispute to what terms actually mean.
Hate speech is happening all the time, and i think that there is now way of stopping everyone from doing it. I don't think that hate speech should be tolerated, but if a law were to be passed making it illegal, there is no way of being able to enforce it. There will always be some group of people just picking away at minorities as there always has been. I think that if people were attacking other people through physical means just because they were different, and this was happening around every corner of every town, then some type of action would have to be taken. Hate speech is wrong and shouldn't be allowed, but there is no way of stopping it as a whole.
I think while hate speech is awful, it is an issue that will never be taken care of. It really couldn't be made up in to as law that is enforceable, reasonable, fair or understandable. I like the point where in the con section, the writer describes names that women don't like being called, but men jokingly refer to other men as. I think it is safe to assume that most of us have heard on tv or elsewhere, black people call other black people nicknames that a white person could never get away with calling a black person. It may be in joking manner, but it is still a "hate" word. If a law was made up about hate speech, it wouldn't be enforceable because the police cannot be in everybody's homes. It would be a nice thing to see if hate speech could be eliminated in public, but it is an issue that has roots a lot deeper than just words.
This is one of the hardest things to decide on because if there are laws againt it then the first amendment has been violated but if there arn't unless the people do something then it won't stop. Hate speech should not be illigal or attacked by any kind of law instead it should be condemed by the people in the socity so the words will still be their but it will socily unexeptible in all parts of the contry for any kinds of hate speech
This is a sad topic because hate speech is everywhere, everyday and its not like we are even aware of it all the time. Hate speech is horrible but i dont think punishing people who do participate in it would be the answer. First i dont think saying we can not give up hate speech because "people bled trying to give us that right" is okay.. Freedom of speech is a really good right but i dont think that you can base todays laws on what people bled over or not. Hate speach is also something that would be hard to catch because unless you were in public there is no proof of people taking part in it. Instead of trying to get certain people in trouble i think law makers should go to the source. The enternainment industry and media are probably the biggest contributers of how people talk because its where people see everything for the first time. Some of the first swears, first hate speechs, the media influences everything. However, bad words and hate speeches sell better music, TV and movies. I think that right now society kind of says that hate speech is okay, but its not. Law makers need to emphasize that hate speech is not okay and should not be a part of society (but not punish people).
Hate speech is a rough subject, because I understand that you have the right to freedom of speech but in certain situations things should not be said..like calling a homosexual a fag, or calling a woman the "B word", its all disrespectful and if there was a logical, and forceful way to limit somethings then I say all the power to you. Teenagers swear out of anger, or just because it's something to do, and some adults should parent their kids better about hate speech like don't call a black person the "N word" or just any of that because if you don't what does that say about you as not only a parent but as a person? And who will your kids grow into? They probably will turn into a homophobic, racist, belligerent moron.
Hate speech is somthing that I have always looked down on and yet I can say that I have been a culprit of saying somthing that someone could take as offensive to a friend as a joke (and they understand I am joking). However maybe it should become our society's goal to eliminate that. Hate speech can be taken too far often even if someone is joking.
The enforcement of this would be very difficult. There would have to be officals who monitor your every word and this may soon lead to the government stepping on our toes to our first amendment right. I still feel though that our society has gotten a little carried away witht the amount of explict material that is seen as "okay" on television or in music. Most kids have access to shows or music where racial slurs and swear words are what is only written in the script or lyrics. Parents should make an attempt to keep their kids away from these shows and media and teach them that saying those words is hurtful and mean. It may not solve all of the Hate speech problems but it is a start.
Though I strongly dislike hate speech, society as a whole cannot help but to take part in it. Whether it be in a joking manner or meant to hurt someone, hate speech is offensive to many. However, I do not believe that hate speech will ever disappear or have a law against it. If that were to happen, well, even more violence would break out because people would feel that they are being denied their first amendment rights. Hate speech is a serious offense in many cases, but as long as you teach others and your kids to have a broader perspective of the world and accept people for who they are, they will not be as inclined to take part in these hurtful and horrible speeches. They would begin to develop a better sociological and psychological view of why some people are the way they are and that we should not discriminate against others who are different from the "norm" of society. I highly do not tolerate hate speech and though many are being hurt emotionally, they are not being hurt physically. The best thing to do would be to just walk away from these hate speeches and try to ignore them. It is a hard task, but maybe if enough people just ignored them, they might start to disappear because their would be a lack of excitement of getting others riled up. Most likely, the people taking part in the hate speeches would see themselves growing weak and realize their speeches were not taking as big of an impact on society as they thought it would. It is a hard topic to try and ban when there really is no way of banning these hate speeches without causing much controversy among society.
I believe that hate speech will never be a fully secured issue. I believe that while hate speech is offending to many that the people that are giving the hate speech have the right to speak their mind. It is just like the case of security vs. rights. How much security can there be with out violating a persons civil rights. If there was something passed to try and ban hate speeches would it really work? Do the people really think that the Klan would stop giving these kinds of speeches? I believe that a law would not be enforceable, it would just be a security blanket for the government.
I think hate speech should be tolerated.. because if you think of it its been happening for a long time. I dont agree with it but ive came to the fact that theres nothing much you can do, try and convince over a million people or enforce that many people. every were its happening people usually have dealt with it. and you cant just stop the KKK like they are bad and i dont believe in anything the say but. its freedom of speech you have the right to march and protest and to say what you want. and everyone does it rather they notice it or not.
As T.M. Beeker stated in his article, there are some things in life that just have to be ignored. Although I am not an advocate of hate speech, it seems as though it has become a part of our culture, and I don't think that a complicated law will be able to free us from the society that we have created. Even if there was a way to get rid of hate speech, it would be infringing on our first amendment rights; we would be destroying the basis on which our country was created. I don't think congress could possibly make a law that follows all the guidelines for a good law. First of all, there is no way that the law would be enforceable, there are just too many people. Eliminating hate speech from the society is not exactly reasonable either. Taking away our first amendment rigts would not be fair or reasonable. And finally, the law would have to be understandable to everyone; good luck with that congress. So, although hate speech does not bring out the best in us, it seems as though it is here to stay.
I do not think that "hate speech" should be tolerated. Unfortunately it seems that racism, descrimination, stereotyping, and putting down people is normal to many people. It's stupid. Wake up people, we're all just human beings, trying to make it by in life. Something should be done, something needs to be done. Maybe not so much as creating laws, but as a society. Some people need to just pull their head out of their ass and get with it. As the article said, we all need to set good examples and except people. I can't stand listening to ignorant people ramble on about why a group of people is "lesser" than their own. In closing, I hate Hate Speech.
Freedom of speech is a right that every American is provided with because those men fought and died for our right to have it. However, I think hate speech is taking the freedom of speech to an unfair advantage of that right. It would be violating people's rights to say that it cannot take place, but I do not think that the singling out of certain groups to hate upon isn't necessary or fair. I think people just shouldn't take advantage of their right to speak freely.
I agree with many of the above comments that hate speech is wrong, but there's no way to stop it. Laws are supposed to protect the common good, so I can see why some feel the need for laws dealing with this issue, but as the article explained, making laws to stop hate speech would very difficult and people probably wouldn't be able to understand the laws or follow them. On top of everything else, the police wouldn't be able to enforce the laws anyway. And who would be able to say whether or not something that was said was hateful or just a joke? I think that arguements about this and the laws in general could potentially cause more conflict than there is now, without laws on hate speech.
Hate speech should not be tolerated to a point. I think that hate speech that singles out a minority or an individual person is cruel. However I think its fair if I were to rant about how I hate the "incredibly smart" decisions of our school administration. I believe that befor any laws are passed on the subject we should clearly define the difference between hate speech and critisism. ... ps i cant spell
i agree that hate speech should not be tolarated. and i feel that by saying that it always includes crude jokes about certain groups.
i feel that there can no law agianst because then more conflict will start up. but what i would suggest is the people in society act respectful. there is not need for hate speech anywhere.
i feel that people today take things to personal and then on the other side there are people when called vulgar names just laugh at it. this society needs some healing to happen.
personally, i think if we COULD put people in jail for hate speech, we should. the problem is it's not enforcable. i think a way to stop hatespeech without passing a law about it would be to take action publicly. if more people spoke up about hate speech and the effects of it than maybe it would help little by little. ofcourse there will always be those ignorant, stuck in their ways, *jerks ... but i think speaking out against it would reduce it. i do agree that it is freedom of speech and everyone should have that right.. but in regards to a persons feelings it can really hurt someone. in a way i would consider it cruel (not so unusual) punishment for people who cna't help what they are. like racism or homophobes.
*TEASE HAIR NOT FAGS PEOPLE!*
Hate speech should not be tolerated, because it may make people upset, and that would lead to violence. I dont think people should have to defend themselves against others, they wouldn't have to if people didn't write it or say it in the first place. If we could just end all the nonsence.
I think that hate speech should not be tolerated, but in reality how can you stop it? anyone can argue that the first amendment rights allow the freedom of speech and therefore what can you really do about hate speech? it is morally wrong as well as hurtful and can lead to more serious consequences, potentially even violence. the fact that it is becoming accepted in society today is really appauling and not right. as the article said, the KKK and other groups like it have made their name by hate speech and their violent acts. are these acts tolerated? no...but they are still allowed to "peaceful assemble". to get rid of hate speech entirely would be a violation of our first amendment rights, the fact remaining that it is wrong. Even though hate speech shouldnt be tolerated, the fact is that it is because of the controversy that would occur in order to stop it completly. Until this changes, hate speech will sadly be a tolerated thing in society today.
A lot of people have hate. Displaying hate speech is not a good way to show how you feel because that can get you into trouble. I think, if you really hate someone strongly you should just keep it inside.
I dont think we should allow hate speech at all. people should be able to say what they want but hating on other people isnt a positive way of speaking your mind. i think if you have the right to say what you want it should be positive and not put other people down. in a way i think hate speech is kind of like when we used to have slaves, only its speaking about it not doing it. which is still not right. i dont think you could stop the right to free speech but maybe we can make a reasonable limit to the things that these people do and say. i still dont think hate speech would stop, but we should all be mature enough to accept people as they are.
people says things everyday that could be considered hate speech. However, there is nothing that anyone can do about. You cannot enforce a law telling people that they are not allowed to say certain words... it is not enforceable. I don't believe that hate speech should be tolerated but i don't believe that if a law was passed to stop it... there is no way taht anyone could enforce it. If a law was passed it would help the common good but no one would follow it.. it would be good but it would never work
Hate speech is everywhere, around everyone, all the time. There is no way of stopping hate speech as much as everyone would like to stop it. I mean unless we take out part of the First Amendment theres nothing anyone can do about it. As hurt full as hate speech can be towards people you just need to ignore it and be leave in your own rights. I mean there isn't a law saying you have listen to them. I do be leave there could be some laws that could limit hate speech among community's
but there hasn't been any yet so there is nothing we can do about it besides maybe hope that something will change.
I personally believe that hate speech should not be allowed, however, in order to put limitations on this, it would violate the first admendment. I think that although it bothers a lot of people (including myself) I think nothing can be done about it because of this violation. I think however some standards should be set. Like you can't rally hate speech with a microphone that can be heard more then a quarter mile... or less... It might seem stupid, but I think these are the only limitations government can put on hate speech, without infringing upon the first admendment.
hate speech is a touchy subject i would like it to be taken away but you could never infringe on people's right like that. if you take away hate speech what else would you take. the next thing you know here will be no freedom of speech. So i think we should keep it but people need to change and not be so ignorant to other people's cultures and lifestyles.
i believe hate speech should be a thing of the past as well as slavery and any other hate crimes of that sort. there are so many different kinds of people in this world and there is too many ways to hate those people. our society makes it so easy to bring hate anywhere you go and there is nothing more that can ever rip this country or even world apart.
Hate speech is an issue that I feel is ever present in our society, but at times is very hard to control. When, as a society, we say that we want to eliminate hate speech the first thing that comes to mind are the way certain groups and klans have made it a part of their message. They use hate speech in its most disrespectful manor as a way of trying to spread their message. Then, because hate speech can essentially be taunting, the messages these groups portray begin to influence violence and controversy. This is where ideally the line would be drawn and a potential bill would limit the use of hate speech but in the literate culture where our laws are written down and so deeply interpreted, hate speech cannot easily be banned. If we were to try and ban hate speech we would ultimately, whether we mean to or not, be taking away the freedoms granted to us in the first amendment (that and of course the right to mutter a phrase or two in private about a co-worker or boss). So for now all we can do is abide by the no hate speech law in the Big Book of Etiquette and hope that enough people realize the meaninglessness of it which could prevent hate speech from even being an issue for future generations.
Hate speech should not be allowed. There is no way to get rid of it without violating our first amendment. There is still plenty of ignorance in our society so we as people cant take it upon ourselves to get rid of it. It is a hard subject to touch upon because getting rid of it violates our first amendment, but keeping it does not promote the common good.
"Tolerance" and "Allowance" are two different things a society can allow soemthing and still not tolerate it, the majority of americans probally do not tolerate the gays but we allow them. If we were to make a law stopping hate speech then what would stop us from making a law that stops love speech? Doesn't it offend just a smany people?
Hate speech is important because it reminds of how free we are to verbally spread hate, with our rights to say things we want to say. America was founded on hate (towards the king)
Hate speech is a really touchy subject. everybody has their own opinion on it, and most of the time it causes problems. People have freedom of speech, but i dont think you should take that freedom to a higher type of level, such as hate speech. you have the freedom to say what you want, but in a not so hurtful way. people dont like being picked on and they like to be respected, but with hate speech you are single-ing out one person or one group. i do think that you should be able to say what you want, because if you couldnt then theres no freedom of speech. but i do think that you should be respectful of other people. keep your opinions to yourself, because most people dont care what you think of them. they have the freedom and the right to live the way they want to, and you cant take that away from them with hate speech, and i think more people need to recognize that.
I think that hate speech is a ridiculous thing happening and shouldn't be tolerated. Victims of hate speech are obviously affected negatively, and some of the times to a pretty far extent. I don't really believe that it would be possible to have laws regarding hate speech though, it would be to difficult to enforce properly and it seems like there would be a lot of gray area. Although i dont agree with hate speech, sadly its kind of covered by our 1st Amendment rights. In reality there will always be people out their with certain beliefs that we cant change.
so the hate speech is just experison of ones thoughts about a subject that feel is wrong...we shoulder tolterate it do its just thoughts in words said aloud. We have things we dont like but still say things about like your government and thre polices
I think hate speech is something that noone should tolerate. It can effect people in a harmful way. If there was to be a law stating that hate speech is illegal then i think the world would be less violent. People wouldnt say harmful things to others if they knew they would get a fine or some other kind of punishment. Will it be possible to stop hate speech? probably not but it might be worth trying to stop.
Even though hate speech can be ignored, I don't think it's a thing to be tolerated. It's sort of mocking and taking advantage of the Freedom of Speech. Hate speech only spreads violence and nonsense hate. I don't agree with certain groups and ethnicities being singled out and rediculed with demeaning labels.
I think that any type of "hate speech" laws definitely fall into bad laws category. One of the important things that goes with a good law is be able to enforce it. How in the world would you enforce such a law. The government would have to set up a "Big Brother" system to catch people using these words. Also the law has to be reasonable and although one might not want to admit we all use these hate words when we are angry at someone or just angry in general. Banning these words could also start to encroach on some of our other rights. Being able to use these words and the words themselves are unfortunately a part of our culture and it is something we all have to deal with and do on occasion. As they say "sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me."
Although i strongly believe in saying what you wish, i do not agree or believe in hate speech.. i feel that it is very uneccissary there are many other ways to get your point across about someone or something with out making it public or harmful. I dont think that a law should be made for it because i dont feel it will do any good, and it will contradict the first amendment. but i think people should stand up and figure a way to stop it.
I do believe that hate speech should not be tolerated. It happens all over the world an we should put a stop to it. Yes people do have the freedom of speech. But some people take way to far. If we allowed hate speech so many people would be hurt verbaly. But it is such an impact on someones personality. Hate speech brings it down. A law may help destroy hate speech but its not fully gonna go away.
Nation wide in 2006 there were a reported 9,652 deaths by hate related crimes. Of those, 52.1 percent of the victims were targeted because of the offender’s bias against a race. 18.1 percent were victimized because of a bias against a religious belief. 15.3 percent were targeted because of a bias against a particular sexual orientation. 13.5 percent were victimized because of a bias against an ethnicity/national origin. 1.0 percent were targeted because of a bias against a disability.
None of this was contrived look it up for your self off the FBI records. Ten thousand people are now six feet below the ground some where because some one decided those victims don't have the birthright to breathe the same air as them. Now of course these are examples of hate crimes and not hate speech. But aren't they both part and parcel of a bigger issue. I'd look it up if I really wanted to see the actual number of suicides in this country, predictably due to their verbal alienation or exclusion from the normal crowd. Of course it’s enforceable to legislate against what people say. Sure its radical but what the hell since the patriot act was passed we're all being wire tapped anyway. People can be jailed for making threats against the president why not for making threats against a black man, or a gay woman, or a child in a wheelchair? In reality though, that conversation is a better one to have in the abstract. In the mean time however, anyone who would take the life of a person because of a grudge they have against that person's differences, or anyone who would be so hurtful in their words as to drive a person to take their own life for their differences can take the first amendment and promptly... well... they know where to shove it.
I think hate speech is a terrible thing, but i also dont think people can really enforce it. I understand the first amendment gives you that right to say how you feel about things and people but it is hurtful and mean, it shouldnt be tolerated. But its not really realistic that we'd be able to put people in jail and enforce the hate speech law rule. I think hate speech is something everyone has grown up to know, and even though people may say hurtful things they've grown to ignore or deal with it. and for those who havent should probably start trying, its not something that i see changing as mean as it is.
Yes, I think that hate speech should be tolerated, because it is a right guaranteed by the first amendment. Although it's true that hate speech can lead to violence and hostility, so can denying someone that right. While laws preventing hate speech may appear to be promoting the common good, they would be almost entirely unenforceable and would most likely just provoke those who speak hatefully and are suddenly denied that right that they have always had. I don't agree with hate speech but tolerating it is not the same as advocating it. Hateful or not, I think all types of speech should be acknowledged under the first amendment. Despite how much I dislike hate speech, I do not support censorship.
some hate speech should be allowed, but most shouldnt. i think that anyone should be able to say what they feel without getting penalized for it. i also think if it is hurting other people then there needs to be a consiquence. picking on someone is degrating to them. when people commit suicide it is mostly because they were picked on and were hurt because of hate speech. yes you do have the right to free speech but it is also a privalige. hate speech is wrong. there is an extent as to what you can say. and to what the society accepts when people go against that it is concidered hate speech. instead of going around saying hurtful things to people, the people who are sayingt should put them in the other persons shoes. a good example of this is the movie i now pronounce you chuck and larry. being hurtful isnt helping you any its just making people not like you. so deal with your own issues and leave others alone!
This is a tough one for me. I agree with the first half of the article in the fact that I don't appreciate being called a b*tch or a c*nt, I don't know too many women who do appreciate it. And I know if I were of an African American origin, I'd not appreciate being called a n*gger, or if I were a Mexican, a beaner. I think it would be nice to think that hate speech is considered illegal, but the fact is there is no legitimate way to stop people from using hate speech. One can be fined or whatnot for certian word usage, but that's only if their caught, and these terms... are used so frequently, there's no possible way to catch everyone who uses these terms. I think if anything, people should be aware of how frequently they use workds like f*uck, b*tch, etc... because it's plain RUDE! I think America as a whole needs a lesson on manners too, because in most countries, hate speech, isn't a problem, and it's pretty pathetic that it is here.
HATE SPEECH IS BAD AND WRONG really but it doesnt mean we should stop it people need to get there emotions out even if its in a bad way
i think hate speech should be banned. It makes people want to die, its just not right. Like if you are saying hate speech towards someone then they feel insignifacant and rejected and then they get sad and a little bit suicidal. Hate speech isnt cool and we all feel its negative affects.
What do I think about hate speech..hmmm?? Hate speech is worng it should be banned. It's just not right. I understand that we can't get rid of hate speech for good but if we tried we can get rid of most of it. Start with a smile that can go a long way. We should at least try to get rid of hate speech. Being called names can hurt someone more than you think and the next thing you know you are responsible for their death. So next time you are about to call someone a name think about where it could really end up in the end.
I believe hate speech is a horrible aspect of American society. Throughout the past years hate speech has become more and more common then ever and to some people, it's a regular part of their daily vocabulary. However, in order to make laws about banning hate speech we would be violating our first amendment rights and this would cause uproar to those that feel so strongly about keeping the issue legal. Banning hate speech would be nearly impossible to enforce and I think that it would cause the people who use hate speech against others to act out and find other ways to discriminate against others. The outcome of the issue will have an affect on everybody and unfortunately, will never go away.
i agree with what joel is saying for the most part. hate speech is pretty much guaranteed to us as long as we dont step over the line and what we say becomes slander. basically people have no recourse against people who use "hate speech". i think it is for the most part a dead end for people who try to stop hate speech. there is basically nothing anyone can do about hate speech or anything they can do to regulate it.
I agree that hate speech is a terrible thing. But I do not see any way that a law against it can be enforced. People could easily be mistaken for what hate speech is and what joking around is. Obviously if it hurts someone that's not a joke. But sometimes some people are too sensitive. If someone calls a person a "nerd" (to keep it PG) and they are hurt, is the name caller supposed to be punished? or should the person just get over it, or maybe even accept that fact. haha. Hate speech is really hard to define, and creating a law against it is really hard. I totally agree that in different situations, like at a school or at work, if someone is using hate speech the higher authority should definitely have the power to punish that person. But I don't think any laws can reasonably be made against it.
**I also meant to mention that the name caller calling someone a nerd, could have been joking.
hate speech is one of the few things that actually bothers me, i mean really gets under my skin. but this doesn't make it illegal.
as much as i'd like to say that it's completely wrong and bla bla bla...it's not, at least i don't think it is, morally yes, legally no.
besides the fact that it would be completely impossible to enforce or prosecute on, laws against hate speech would be a complete violation of the first amendment. it doesn't say "freedom of speech so long as its not offensive."
and yes, it's true that hate speech can quite often result in violence, but its the violence that's illegal, not the speech. and until it is taken to a violent level, nothing can legally be done.
so unless this hate is being dealt with in a more physical manner than speech, people have every right to discuss and share their hatreds.
i stronly dislike the word hate :(
Every American has the right to peacefully assemble, and the freedom to say whatever they please. Therefore, every American has the right to peacefully assemble hate. It may not sound like it makes sense, but that's the way it is.
Hate speech is a terrible thing, but it would be hard to say what hate speech is. The way I see it, there is hate speech in the hallways of our school all the time. Is it fair to say that you can't talk about what someone else said of you or did to you to let others know they're "a bad person?"
I think it is. But how much is too much? When violence occurs as a result?
It would be difficult to judge on the spot as to what hate speech is.
Hate speech should not be tolerated at all. People rely on the government and being politicaly correct too much, we have to break away from all this. Yes we have our right to free speech but people abuse it sometimes and the only way to fill in the void that the law can't is its enforcment. If society looked down upon hate speech then we as a country would have less hate. Supporting hate speech supports other deadly ideas; like racisim. So my over all answer to "should we tolerate hate speech?" is a big NO! -steez
I think that this topic is actually a touchy situation. Hate speech is all around us, if you think about it, everywhere you go you hear it. I don't think that there is any law out there that can be enforced to stop hate speech, too many people are doing it. If there was a law passed to stop hate speech then there is no way that it could be enforced, like I said too many people are doing it. Hate speech is not only occuring in our country but in the world itself. The whole world would probably be in jail. There's always going to be that group of people picking on others...nobody will ever be able to prevent it, only you yourself.
Hate speech — derisive, misguided, and childish as it may be — is something I believe we should allow in our society. In the United States we are lucky enough to be able to protest the motives and actions of our government and elected officials. Were you, say, from Pakistan and you decided to speak poorly of the Pakistani government, then... well we all saw what happened to Benazir Bhutto. So what if a few ignorant people are allowed to propagate their racist creed? I say let them go ahead, and for those people who don't want to hear it: buy earplugs. Freeing the airways of hateful words isn't worth sacrificing the First Amendment.
This is a very touchy subject. Hate speech should not be tolerated even if ment as a joke. Allowing ppl to joke around by using the word c-nt make it seem just that more acceptable. But using words like that towards some one is not acceptable. Though I think that there is no way to pass a law that would make ppl stop using those words. Because it would be very hard to enforce such a law.
Its hard to stop something like hate speech. I think there should be laws against it because all it does is put people down and know one gets anything from it. All it doesn is hurt people. On the other hand even if there was a law who would agree with it or fallow it; And how could we ever enforce it? I think its sad that people are fighting for there right to put other people/ groups down.
Hate speech should be tolerated to an extent. The first ammendment covers our freedom of speech. If someone is harassing someone to an untolorable extent then they should be able to be punished or not aloud to say sum such things. However, there is really no way to inforce hate speech. you cant have tape recorders in someones home to enforce that and there is really no evidence when someone is speaking hatefully. I think it is wrong, but there is no real way to stop it.
Hate speech cant really be avoid, but it is wrong. but if we make a law against it it's going against the 1st amendment people should think when they say about one homosexual person that they don't like, even if their not meaning it to all the other homosexual people that are out there they can take offense to it and they can take it into their own hands and act out towards people that are not apart of it and even the people that are part of it. people can be hurt and as it isn't illegal people should still watch what they say about people.
Of course a hate speech shouldn't be tolerated, i mean why would you want to first off bash on someone for his or her beiefs . Then ranting about it would be ridiculous and pointless. Hate speeches are rude, if you need to voice your thoughts or opions, keep them to yourselfs if there about others.
